Study Notes From Esther Chapter 6

God has a sense of humor. This may be the funniest chapter in the Bible but also one of the best examples of a godly man not lording it over his enemy’s shame.

6:1-4, God shows up to intercede for Mordecai, Esther, and the Jews. From His heavenly throne, God keeps the king awake. It seems the king combats insomnia by reading his own history. Tonight, God chose his reading material and Xerxes learns Mordecai’s act was unrewarded.

God, when writing the book of Esther, did not record Mordecai as prideful. Even when he saved the king’s life, he never said anything when unrecognized. Both Xerxes and Mordecai seem to have forgotten the episode.

Mordecai’s unpretentiousness is similar to Daniel when he brushed off Belshazzar’s gifts of the royal robe and the gold chain. (Daniel 5:17) A pagan king’s rewards are cheap trifles when your King is Almighty God.

"Let another man praise you. and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips." Proverbs 27:2. 

"Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven" Matthew 6:1.

Mordecai is a great example of Peter’s exhortation, “Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time” 1 Peter 5:6.

The servants in the gate put Mordecai and Haman in a battle of wills, (3:2-5) Now Mordecai’s faithful stance is holding and he appears to be winning. Haman, on the other-hand, though he exalted himself, is about to be brought low.

Mordecai did nothing but prepare for God’s answer with fasting and prayer. He exhorted Esther to speak on their behalf and sought God’s protection in faith. When he knew Haman’s sanctioned plot was set to destroy him and his people:

He did not storm the castle.

He did not attack Haman personally.

He did not override Esther's free will.

He trusted Esther's own personal faith.

He fasted and prayed.

He trusted God.

Paul exhorts us to wield the sword of the Spirit with care. “For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled” 2 Corinthians 10:3-6.

We learn obedience through practicing the meekness of our Lord Jesus Christ. For although He has all the power that holds creation, He never uses it to subvert His greater plan of salvation. The pain and humiliation was overcome in victory by obedience. (Hebrews 12:1-3). Mordecai’s obedience sets the stage for Haman’s punishment from God.

Mordecai has let God have the glory. “For whoever humbles himself will be exalted and whoever exalts himself will be humbled” Matthew 23:12.

6:5-11, God has begun to show Himself to the condemned Jews when Haman is forced into the humiliating position of delivering the king’s blessing to Mordecai. The very blessing Haman had imagined his own. The city is seeing the beginning of the end for Haman.

6:12, “Afterward, Mordecai went back to the king’s gate” seems an understatement.

When we see God lift a great burden, we praise with joyful hearts and voices. His time of fasting is over and this is answered prayer. Here, Mordecai appears silent as he waits on God. He still has to wait for Esther to plead to the king.

“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10.

But there is a stronger witness from Mordecai as he does not lord it over Haman for the episode in the city square. He leaves room for God to bring Haman’s defeat.

“Do not rejoice when your enemy falls, and do not let your heart be glad when he stumbles; lest the Lord see it, and it displease Him, and He turn away His wrath from him” Proverbs 24:17.

God sees our pride and if displeased, He has the privileged of lifting our enemies back up and not punishing them because we took it upon ourselves to condemn them in their troubles.

In what circumstances might we fail our witness by being prideful?

Haman is now falling before the eyes of the city. Xerxes still is blind to Haman’s jealousy, but it has been in plain sight to all the residents of Shushan. (see J. Vernon McGee’s notes) And God knows Haman’s heart.

6:13-14, Haman has a houseful of eager gossips awaiting his remarks but the man is in defeat. His wife makes the fatalistic statement, “Husband, you’re doomed.”

Esther’s banquet likely forgotten and when he’s summoned back to the palace it was probably the last thing he wanted. For going back to the palace meant being seen by the people as if he’s being ‘taken’ to the king. This could have been avoided if he had only reentered the palace after he had presented Mordecai with the king’s reward.

This entire chapter showcases God’s power over all circumstances, over the evil and the good. Our faith is in the Living God. The Bible is our way of learning about God, there is no other book that showcases Him and Him alone.

Love & Grace--the Ministry Engine

Ministry for God, as witnesses to Jesus is the work that gets the gospel of salvation to the lost. Without love it is impossible. Love is the manifestation that you are of God

"Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophecy" 14:1.

"Pursue love" Jesus said that everyone will know who Christians are because we love each other with the love with which He loves us (John13- 17). Love is the foundation fruit of the Holy Spirit (Mark 12:29-31, Galatians 5).

Desire spiritual gifts" The word 'gifts' is added in the English to help convey what is meant, but the original language says 'desire the Spiritual'. Desire to be filled with the love of God and the power of God to be a witness to the work of Jesus through the cross (Act 1:8) Everything that the Holy Spirit does points to Jesus and the Father, (John 13-17)

So, desire to be the instrument that reveals Jesus and the Father to the world seeking the true and living God. That takes letting the Holy Spirit indwell and fill you. And that is amazing!

'especially that you may prophecy' Paul, under the influence of the Holy Spirit, added this clause with the conjunction 'But' (However, Also, To be sure). It is this kind of speaking witness to Jesus that is the capstone to the work given to born again Christians. For a Christian to correctly speak from and teach from the Bible is how the lost receive the truth of God, (Hebrews 1:1, Romans 10:8-15, 2 Timothy 2:15, 3:16-17)

We serve an amazing God!

Grace is the foundation of all God's works. Without grace we could never be connected to God. It is His grace that supplies the love and life through Jesus Christ.

God's grace is the fuel for all works in Jesus' name.

"And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work. For it is written: "He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever." Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness, while you are enriched in everything f...or all liberality, which causes thanksgiving through us to God. 2 Corinthians 9:8-11.

If God gives you a ministry and you put all your heart into it and make your sacrifice and offering to God for the ministry to save the lost, God takes all that you give, whatever that is, and multiplies it in ways you cannot imagine.

He uses whatever it is you give, whether material, time, or monetary, for His glory and the purpose of saving the lost. And because you can see His grace abounding for all through your love and service to God and people in need, your thanksgivings will multiply and your praise will be sweet.

The Lamb Of God

As He grew up, Jesus saw the yearly Passover lamb killed for the Atonement for sin.

At some point in the 33 years prior to the cross, Jesus, fully human and fully God the Son, accepted the knowledge of why He came to earth.

John the Baptist said on seeing Jesus, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

His last night on earth, facing the horrifying death of the cross the next day, Jesus said to God the Father, "Not My will, but Yours be done."

At some point, Jesus the Man knew what His life was worth. He knew what His sacrifice was worth.

It was worth our lives.

Do we know this?

Do you know this?

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him would not perish but have everlasting life" John 3:16.

If you have never asked Jesus to be your Savior, forgive you and be your Lord, pray something like this. Pray from the heart, with faith.

"Dear Lord Jesus, I know I am a sinner who deserves hell. I know You love me so much You died on the cross for my sin. Please forgive me of my sins against You God and against my fellow men. Please save me Jesus and be my Lord and Savior. Thank you, Lord Jesus for saving me."

If you prayed this prayer, begin reading the Bible and find other believers. Go to a Bible teaching church or join a Bible teaching group.

You may feel differently, you may not, but believe that God has heard you and He has heard your heart say the prayer. He has come to you and He has saved you forever and ever.

Tell someone you have been born again into Jesus and want to learn more about Him.

Motivation in Discouragement

Our faith in God doesn't change with our circumstances. My husband and I love Jesus and trust Him for all things. He is our Comfort and Guide, our Helper and the One who sustains us through all things.

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for,

the evidence of things not seen" Hebrews 11:1.

We are without a personal vehicle.
We are in some financial difficulties. (My husband's age and health have changed our financial situation)
We are awaiting an official decision about a situation that needs clarification.

They are troubling singly and very troubling when coming all at the same time.

But that has nothing to do with our faith in God. God hasn't changed.

• God is still Omnipotent.
• God is still Omnipresent.
• God is still Omniscient.

We still need to pray with thanksgiving and supplication. Our intercessory prayers are not hindered.

We still need to read our Bibles. The truth and power of God's word is still the same.

We still need to evangelize. People held in the bondage of sin need to hear about the free salvation of our God.

These truths are to be grasped with zeal in our faith in God!

"I will lift up my eyes to the hills---from which comes my help?

My help comes from the LORD. who made heaven and earth"

Psalm 121:1,2.

God is doing something about our troubles, even though we know nothing about His future plan at the moment. The outcome is in His hands. Our faith is in Him.

God Gets 'Er Done

Genesis 24: Seeking God's Help In The Workplace

You may be the boss or you may be the least recognized person in your workplace, yet by your faith in God, you can be the most effective in getting things done. Genesis 24 is a great chapter of faith in action and of answered prayer.

"I will make you swear by the LORD, 

and the God of heaven and earth...

Genesis 24:3

An Impossible Task:

    Genesis 24 tells us, with the exception of Isaac, all the people in Abraham's entourage are slaves, servants, or hired help.  From this group of people he commands, Abraham sends a servant on a specific mission---find a wife for my son. (you shall go...and take a wife for my son..." Genesis 24:4) Even as he starts on his way, this man starts praying for success. There was no way he was going to trust his own judgment to get this job done. There is nothing impossible for God, even in your workplace.

"But you shall go to my country 

and to my family, and take a wife 

for my son Isaac" Genesis 24:4

Sincere Prayer:

    Trust God to help you get your work done. This slave prays a very sincere, simple, direct, specific prayer in faith, wanting to successfully complete his mission, and God answered with a miracle. Take the lesson from him that in anything we do, we need the power of God to complete it. God wants us to have faith in Him no matter what.
God's Glory in Our Work:
    After he sees the answer, he is humbled and gives God all the glory for a job well done. We see his faith and acknowledgement of God when he prostrates himself in thanksgiving, oblivious to who noticed. There at the well in front of Rebekah, (vs 26), (and probably all the other women come to get water) And in the presence of Rebekah's family (vs 52). Maybe you shouldn't prostrate yourself in your office, but at your work station, or office space, you can certainly prostrate your heart, unseen to anyone but God.
Spiritual Insight:
    This slave shows God-given discernment of the pagan-ness and greed of Rebekah's family in wanting to get away quickly. (vs 54) One aspect of his work had to interact with these ungodly people, yet he did what he had to do and he does it graciously, politely, but with his integrity intact. Now he wants to get the rest of the job done, which means moving on to the next phase. He had to return to his boss with the complete report and the woman. 

    The lesson here is to recognize and take charge where the job is yours alone and complete it to the very best of your ability to the glory of God. This Spiritual insight will help you stay out of trouble. You will have more knowledge of inter-office dealings, good and bad. And your humble recognition of God's power in your position may help you get a head start on jobs before you are asked.

"For the LORD gives wisdom; From His mouth come 

knowledge and understanding" Proverbs 2:6.

Co-worker's Recognize Your Faith:

    And Rebekah seemed willing to get out her family's house without any customary long goodbyes. Maybe she saw something in this servant that interested her about her future husband. But the main thing is she saw something different in the manner of this man and she got on board with his plan. Seeing his trustworthiness, took her on to success as well.

Get 'Er Done!
    While you may not see the same successes as this man, still you're connection to Almighty God gives you Spiritual insight into God doing something in your workplace. When you do see answered prayer or the awesome power of God where you work make sure you acknowledge that God Got 'Er Done!

"Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; 

not with eye-service, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, 

doing the will of God from the heart" 

Ephesians 6:5,6.

5 Life-Applications from Exodus

5 life-applications we can learn from the beginning of the book of Exodus

1.
"But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the male children alive" Exodus 1: 17

     The faith of the Hebrew midwives. By disobeying the orders to 'post-abort' all male babies, they openly rebelled against the supreme ruler (Pharaoh) of the country that held them as slaves. That took courage but the key to their faith is in the opening of the verse, "But the midwives feared God." Their faith in God and taking action on that faith is beautiful.

• Sometimes Christians have to take a stand against something the government commands as laws for individuals that completely contradict God's laws for all mankind. Because of this distinction, all Christians need to know their Bibles and know their God.

2.
"And they said, 'An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and he also watered the flock'" Exodus 2:17

    Thus begins Moses' 40 year alias. On the lam for murder, in a pagan country, he's mistaken for an Egyptian. It doesn't appear he corrects the mis-identification. And he even marries into the family. Oops, his bad start just got worse.

• If our Christian character is in question in regards to the company we keep, we need to make a change, either by speaking up and identifying ourselves, or get out of there as soon as we can.

3.
"And they said to them, 'Let the LORD look on you and judge, because you have made us abhorrent in the sight of Pharaoh and in the sight if his servants, to put a sword in their hand to kill us'" Exodus 4:21

     Moses' request of Pharaoh to let the children of Israel go from Egypt to worship God didn't go over very well. God had already told Moses Pharaoh wouldn't let them even before Moses left the sheep in Midian. Also, he told God's plan to the people, to which they agreed he talk to Pharaoh. Unfortunately, neither they nor Moses considered such an adverse reaction. Instead of things improving, or even staying the same, it all went sour. And with Pharaoh making daily work harder on the children of Israel, they blamed Moses for upsetting the man.
     Unfortunately this is a familiar reaction with many groups. You tell them a new plan of action and they accept it. But the minute the new plan interrupts or changes their comfort zone then resentment and anger comes against you.

• If you have a clear vision and have the means and/or compulsion to complete it, you may have to go through a lot of trouble on your own. But with God's help, keep on until you get to the conclusion. Hindsight is 20/20 and you opposition will accept it in the end.

Take care what you pray for if 

you're not prepared to be the 

very answer to your own prayer.

4.
"...These are the heads of the fathers' houses of the Levites according to their families" Exodus 6: 25

     Right in the middle of of Moses' telling God He's picked the wrong guy for the job, God gives the Family Tree of the Priests He has chosen. Proof of God's humor.Picture Moses as a small child, his lip thrust out, arms folded, scowling as he says, "Why do I have to?" and picture God as His Dad tolerantly smiling and saying "Because I say so."

• Like Moses, God may pick us for the job, even if we feel disqualified and are absolutely reluctant. In that case we are to go one step at a time, walking carefully in the light, power, and might of God. Never make a move, or decision without prayer and seeking God. It is the only way to accomplish the work. It is then we can say "It was all God's work. Praise Him!"

5.
"And the Egyptians shall know I am the LORD, when I stretch out My hand on Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them" Exodus 7:5

     Take a lesson from the miracles of the plagues. They not only were for Pharaoh and the Egyptians to witness what Almighty God can do but also for the children of Israel to see their God's power.

• Look to God to move the mountains. Grumbling and complaining about oppression and the degradation of social situations isn't going to do anything. Seeking God will.

When God Says No

We give thanks to You, O GOD, we give thanks! 

For Your wondrous works declare that Your name is near. 

Psalm 75:1

God has answered my prayers. In fact, I have just received an answer. It was not the one I was hoping for, but God did answer me. 

Though I am disappointed, the fact I RECEIVED an answer is so awesome as to take away all disappointment in the denial of my request.

How many times has God answered a prayer with Yes, No, or Wait and it's taken for granted because you received an answer?  A bit cheeky isn't it? The Almighty God, Creator of heaven and earth, the Mighty Redeemer, Savior, Holy God gave YOU an answer. The reply shouldn't be treated as an average daily occurrence, should it?

Ask yourself this, "Who am I that Almighty God should take note of me? What did I do to deserve such condescension from such a One as GOD?"

Although what I was hoping heartily for received a No, Wait, Trust Me answer, I am in awe that my God truly cares enough for me to speak so gently and kindly to me even while saying No to my request. I am His child and He knows what is best for me.

The next time you receive an answer to prayer Thank God no matter what the reply to your request.

Headed for Hell Fire

Hello, I'm Susan Estes. For all of you who knew me when I was using drugs and alcohol and who cannot understand what has got into me, I want to say He's Jesus, my Lord and Savior.

You may have the notion I 'cleaned' myself up and 'got religion' and that's why I gave up drugs, drink, & the crazy life. You may think I claim I'm going to Heaven by my change of life.

Nope--I couldn't have cleaned myself up enough. I was headed for Hell Fire, not because of the drugs, alcohol, or promiscuity. I was headed to Hell Fire because in the Garden of Eden Adam defied God's ONE rule. Adam's ONE sin sentenced ALL people to Hell Fire. God told Adam "There's ONE tree in Eden you are NOT to eat from. When you eat it you will surely die." Adam chose the fruit of death for all people. Adam killed everyone. Adam sent me to Hell for eternity.

For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 6:23

Just because I quit the drugs, alcohol, and the crazy life, doesn't make a bit of difference to purge me of the inherited sin of Adam. ONE sin killed me forever. ONE sin keeps me out of Heaven. I can't do a thing to keep me out of Hell Fire. I will never get to Heaven.

As for my believing Jesus--He SAVED me from Eternal Hell Fire. Jesus came to DIE to pay the death sentence brought on by Adam. ONE sin killed me--ONE death saved me.

God said ALL who look at Jesus hanging on the cross 2000 years ago, dying in their place will be saved. I did and I do. I cried, "God forgive me because I know Jesus did that for me. God thank you for making a way for me to escape eternal Hell Fire. Forgive my sin and save me."

That's why I'm a CHRISTIAN. I am saved for eternal Heaven because I feared eternal Hell Fire. I cried to God for forgiveness from being a sinful descendant of Adam.

THAT is what makes me right with God and ONLY that. Jesus loves me and died for me while I was STILL a druggie, drunk and crazy. He died for me without first asking me to clean myself up. And I am not a druggie, or a drunk, or a suicidal crazy anymore because I love Jesus more.

"These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God" 1 John 5:13.

A Thank You

My thank you to all the pastors called for the purpose of preaching and teaching the Word of God. Through the faithful work of a Godly man standing behind a pulpit, I heard Jesus knocking one day. When the pastor gave the alter call, I answered Jesus' knock, going forward to accept His offer of eternal salvation.

"For faith comes by hearing, and hearing  by the word of God"

Romans 10:17.

"That good thing which was committed to you,

keep by the Holy Spirit who dwells in you"

2 Timothy 1:14.

Six Habit-Forming Daily Devotions

Ever wonder if you've prayed enough? Well, you have to answer that one for yourself, but here is a list of six ideas to overcome the challenge of daily devotions in a busy life.

1. Pray before getting out of bed.

Even if you're late and running with the pedal to the metal, don't swing your legs off the bed before saying something to God. Need a short list of prayer requests?

• His Wisdom for whatever you encounter in the day
• His Help with any trouble you're facing
• For someone's salvation
• For someone's health
• Anybody for any reason that comes to mind
• Lord, Help me bless someone today 
• Thank you, Lord

2. Speak a prayer aloud for your spouse or children

Still in a rush? Even in a quick passing, lay your hand on the shoulder of at least one person in your care and say a short prayer. Need a short list of prayer requests? In each short prayer, name the person as you bring them before God.

• Lord, protect (name)
• Lord, I love (name)
• Lord, help (name) today
• Lord, give (name) a peaceful day
• Lord, Thank You for giving (name) to me
• Lord, help me be (name) Husband or Help me be (name) Wife, or Help me be (name) parent

3. Speak a Scripture verse to God

Are you still running late? Don't have time to look up any Bible verses, or read any devotional material? Well, most Christian homes have a verse plaque hanging somewhere, be it Bathroom, Kitchen, or Hallway. Stop and read it to God, taking a breather to think about the power in those words. If you have only a few, then make sure you get more and hang them all over your house. You'll never be without blessing material.

4. Speak a verse aloud

Do you commute in a personal auto? You have time to meditate on at least one verse. If you ride public transport or carpool, maybe you have to wait until you're alone. Take sometime during your day to say a verse aloud. Speaking Scripture is wonderful. You get to think it, feel it in your mouth, and hear it said. Three blessings. Are you at home? Then you can bless a family member with your worship. Maybe you can even speak the verse together, doubling the blessing.

5. Pray before tasting every piece of food or swallow of drink

Even if you're grabbing a doughnut and coffee at the drive-thru, say Thank You, God. You couldn't drive through to get your doughnut and coffee if it weren't for God. It's His car, His food, and especially His money you're spending. He even made it possible for the Drive-Thru to exist at that location.

6. Speak the name of Jesus aloud

For any believer, the name of Jesus is a loving word. It cannot be spoken without some thought about His Holiness, or Grace, or Crucifixion, or Resurrection, or Lordship, or His Forgiveness.

Nurture the habit of speaking love aloud and it'll grow easier every day. As you speak verses and prayers aloud around your family and even among your friends, they'll catch the worship habit as well and multiply the blessing to God.

"For faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God" 

Romans 10:17. NKJ

Ten Things to Pray For in the Lives of Others

Say Amen, It's the Truth

The word Amen is the accepted closing for our prayers and is translated from the Hebrew and Greek as truly, so be it, the truth, trustworthy, surely, and verily. 

When saying Amen, we, in a sense, vow that everything we have just said to God is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. We are claiming that all we've said or asked is in trust and belief in God's perfectness to reply. That's pretty strong stuff to end a conversation with, especially when during our prayer God has read our minds and hearts, weighing our motives against our words.

Amen is a powerful word but just because it is a weighty pronouncement, be at peace knowing it is not always necessary to say the word when ending prayer. God isn't going to pass over your requests if you don't close with Amen. Because God knows our minds, hearts and motives, the Amen is safely implied when our heart is right.

Consider Nehemiah's hurried prayer.

"Then the king said to me, "What do you request?" So I prayed to the God of heaven" Nehemiah 2:4.

The next verse begins with "And I said to the king..

& there's Peter's cry to Jesus,

"But when he saw that the wind was boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink he cried out, saying "Lord, save me!" Matthew 14:30.

Jesus reached out and saved him.

It is probably safe to assume neither man felt compelled to say "Amen" in the immediacy.

M---My prayer ....... I bring this to You because I believe in You

E---Enjoyed talking with You, God .......self-evident meaning

N---Now I'm surrendered .......another self-evident meaning

 Another wonderful thing about this word is when God answers your prayer, it is absolutely acceptable to shout AMEN in praise!

Dance, Dance, Dance

“Then Miriam…took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dances”  Exodus 15: 20.  

Girls-it's okay 

to dance!!

 Miriam expressed thankfulness to God before an audience of a million people but there’s a popular saying, 'Dance like no one is watching.' If you’re alone, why not dance to God as an expression of your love for Him. Jesus says what you do as faith unto God in your privacy will be seen by God and blessed. (Matthew 6: 6)

Enjoy your freedom and praise God for life, breath and being beautifully woman. God loves you to be free and uninhibited before Him, such as David danced when bringing the Ark of the Covenant into Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 6: 14) The Bible never says God was displeased with Miriam's exhibition of joy. 

 

 In God’s sight, women and men are equal, though by God's blessing and the necessity of difference, they do different things.

 But even so, a woman's a place of honor in being feminine is God given. No matter what, enjoy your life as a woman and thank Him with dance.
